It is not often that a small community like ours has the opportunity to welcome the President of the United States.  As a business owner, parent, citizen and active member of our community I find the President’s visit an exciting testament to our young people, the administrators at MNTHS and a sign of good things to come for our community.

Manor New Tech High School is Nationally Recognized

Manor New Tech High School (MNTHS)  has approximately 400 students.  Last year, all 400 students wrote the President a letter inviting him to visit their nationally recognize school.  MNTHS is unique in the district.  Students are admitted on a lottery basis.  The curriculum is focused on technology and is intended to help better prepare students for the digital job market. What a marvelous experience for our young people!

We want to give a special shout out to one of our favorite young customers Jourdan Tucker.  She will be singing the National Anthem!  I have known Jourdan’s mom and grandparents since I was a 4 or 5.  We share in the Ellison and Tucker family’s pride!

Manor, Texas in the Spotlight

• Contest open to anyone who is a fan of Good Luck Grill.

• Your design is for the front of the shirt and may encompass an area up to 10″ x 10″.

Don’t let the word “tournament” intimidate you.  While we do have highly competitive players attending, participants span the gamut of skill level. Our philosophy is, the more the merrier!   One of the things I enjoy most about the washer pitching tournaments here at the Good Luck Grill is the camaraderie.  It’s great to see kids and adults alike partnered together and people of different skill levels and backgrounds having a good time.  It’s good plain fun!

 Washer Pitching Tournament Details

• When:  Saturday March 23, 2012
• Start:     12 open registration begins, 1:00 tournament start
• Price:   20  $ per team
• Double elimination – each team will play at least 2 different teams

Tournaments usually last until 4pm-ish depending on the number of teams.  If you would like to play, but do not have a partner, please come anyway.  There is usually someone else looking for a partner.

Stick around for live music from the Seville’s from 6-9.  They play a variety of oldies, pop and rock ‘n roll.

The Good Luck Grill (GLG) is proud to participate in the kickoff event for Rodeo Austin for the third year in a row.  Thousands of Austinites will converge on Auditorium shores to watch the sun come up over Town Lake while they enjoy breakfast and a variety of western heritage entertainment.  One of the highlights of the event is to watch the cowboys cook biscuits and coffee chuck wagon-style over hot burning coals.  There is a little something for everyone at this family friendly event including live animals, live music, and educational displays….and catfish.  Click here to see pictures from previous years.

The GLG will be giving away samples of their popular Crispy Southern Fried Catfish Toes.  Other vendors will provide a variety of food and drink that will likely include breakfast tacos, coal fired biscuits, pancakes and maybe even a kolache or two.

Good Luck Grill owner Shana Whiteley says, “The Cowboy Breakfast is a great way to get our community excited about and involved in Rodeo Austin.  Building community is the most important thing we do at the GLG.  Young people from all over Central Texas benefit from Rodeo Austin scholarships and participating in the stock show, fair and rodeo.  The more people we can get involved in Rodeo Austin, the richer our community becomes.”

The Cowboy Breakfast is one of those true Austin area events not to be missed.  The crowd is a fun blend of people from all walks of life.  Festivities are from 6-9am on Friday, March 1^st on Auditorium Shores.  The event is free and appropriate for all ages.

Who loves pancakes?  Join us for one of our last fundraisers of the year.  Saturday we will host the Manor High School Baseball team’s Pancake Breakfast fundraiser from 8-10 am followed by our Manor Market Days from 9-2pm.

What is a Spirit Night?

Instead of having to send your kids out to use their sweet face and charm to get your family, friends and neighbors to buy stuff they half-heartedly want, you can come eat with us on a scheduled evening or for a particular event, and a percentage of the proceeds will go to your organization.  It is that easy! Everyone has to eat right?  The added benefit of such fundraisers is the fellowship, no organizing, no volunteering, and NO begging!

Manor Mustangs beat Fort Bend Marshall 26 to 20 in the Alamo Dome!

It has been such an exciting football season.  We at the Good Luck Grill have been honored and enjoyed being  be a part of this magical season.  It has been fun to watch the students and see our entire community rally behind them.  The football team’s success is energizing for our entire community!  GO WAMM NATION. Next Saturday we play Cedar Park in Georgetown at 1:00. Then it’s Dallas here we come!

Kiya Heartwood

Award winning singer/songwriter Kiya Heartwood’s music is described as “soulful confessions, political broadside and a wicked groove.” Over the years, the different incarnations of her music have taken the flavors of Reggae and Rap (Radio Cafe), Roots Americana (Stealin Horses), Folk Rock (Wishing Chair), and now as her solo career begins to ramp up (again), we see the culmination of 30 years of honing her craft.

With over a hundred original recorded songs to choose from, her live performances are never stale or recycled. She happily draws from her past, and channels it through her present. Much like a good curry, the blend of spices Kiya infuses into her songwriting and performance bring a complexity and diversity that can’t quite be labeled or boxed in.
Heartwood’s recently released solo album, Bold Swimmer, is garnering rave reviews from serious music aficionados. Bold Swimmer was produced by Mark Hallman who works with artists such as Eliza Gilkyson, Ani Di Franco, and Oasis. Richard Marcus calls it, “a damn good album,” and Lane Gosnay says Kiya “delivers keen lyrical folk sensibility through a rock n ro

Greg Whitfield

Austin singer/songwriter/guitarist Greg Whitfield has a long history as guitarist for Kevin Fowler (Beer, Bait and Ammo, High on the Hog, Live at Billy Bob’s, Loose, Loud and Crazy), Walt Wilkins (Vigil), Bonnie Bishop (Long Way Home, Soft to the Touch, Live at Magnolia Avenue), George Ensle (Live at Studio 1A, Build a Bridge, Small Town Sundown), Pauline Reese (Pauline Reese, Trail to Monterrey, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly), Wake Eastman (Against the Grain) Devon Heath (Give It To Me Straight), Autumn (Sugarcane), Byrd and Street (Love Broke the Fall, Then and Now), and Fred Fuller (To Sing Once Again). In addition to being a fixture in the Austin recording scene, Greg Whitfield’s songwriting continues to garner accolades – his song “You Don’t Laugh Anymore” won the prize for best inpirational song and his song “I’m Yours” took top honors in 2009′s Austin Songwriters Group Song Competition. His debut cd GW combines rich vocals, layered guitars and a skilled rhythm section including Mike Rieman (bass), Ken Johnson (drums), Artie Passes (steel guitar), and Jack Gaskin (fiddle). His Live Set cd, recorded at KUT-FM’s studios features many of the same players and a wealth of newer material, and his “Alphasongs” cd for children has sold thousands of copies and is used by primary teachers in classrooms throughout the country. No stranger to the live stage, Whitfield has performed at Live Aid, Willie Nelson’s 4th of July Picnic, Austin City Limits Festival, and has shared the stage as guitarist for Walt Wilkins, Tina Wilkins, Kevin Fowler, Ryan James, Bonnie Bishop, George Ensle, Pauline Reese, Rusty Weir, and Ray Price.

Shana and Lupe celebrating GLG’s 5th Birthday

It is with much gratitude that I say…  Thank you to everyone who has been by my side during this walk to our fifth birthday… that at many times, has been… uphill both ways… in the snow and barefoot.  November is National Gratitude Month… here are just a few things I am grateful for:
You… Our customers, who keep coming back time and again – with a new friend or two in tow.  Our customers ~ who have been here from day one… and have become family, trusted advisers… and continue to cheer us on!    

My circle of friends and extended family… who has done everything but a headstand on the side of the road to make sure people know where to get a great meal in Manor.

My first food service rep, Billy, who was a constant source of wisdom and encouragement.

My catering supply guy, friend and cheerleader, Stan, for whom I could not have taken on many of the projects that were put in front of me.

My lifelong friends and 2nd parents, the Alexander’s, who let me raid “Nanna’s Antique Warehouse” and show their unfaltering support at every turn. Our family friends, the Wilson’s, who have shown their continued support and belief in me.

My staff…  whether they worked at GLG for a day or for 5 years have helped me to be a better leader, owner and person.

My awesome friend, adviser, positive attitude generator and right hand person, Lupe…  who keeps me focused and sane and who’s “I CAN” attitude is infectious.

My sweet baby boy, Wesley, who inspires me and reminds me that it is important to play as hard as you work.

My sister, Nishi, who is the world’s best marketer, friend, and Princess of Exuberance for all things Good Luck Grill.

My parents, James and Nadine… for without them – I’d have never made it.
The idea of Good Luck Grill came long before 2007.  I wanted more… and a dream was born.  Being in the restaurant business is what I know.  I am sure that I could do something else…  but, I don’t know what that would be!  While not alwayas as glamorous as one might believe… it is my passion and I love it.  What other job could I have that allows me to get to know so many wonderful people in Manor and the surrounding communities? Sometimes I get preoccupied, busy or lose focus… and think that I have not taken the time to say thank you.

THANK YOU!  To all of those who helped a girl with a dream… realize it!

In addition to Coach Jackson introducing the football team, there will be performances by the MHS cheerleaders, high steppers, award winning band, and drum line. A portion of the sales at Good Luck Grill will be donated to support the participating spirit organizations.

Friday night, October 19^th, the Manor Mustangs (3-3) take on Georgetown’s East View Patriots (2-4) at the Manor Athletic Complex at 7:30 PM. Prior to the game, Manor Excel Academy will hold their coronation ceremony and half time will be extended for the Manor High School coronation ceremony.

The 21^st Annual Manor Fest is coming soon, with fun for the entire family!

This year’s festivities include live music, a parade, the Classic Car Show, a BBQ Cook-off and Dessert Bake-off, bingo played with a live chicken, a frozen tee shirt contest, an auction, and vendors selling a wide assortment of crafted items and food.

Manor Fest begins on Friday, October 5, 7PM at the Manor Lions Club. Live music will be provided by the  Everydudes from 7 to 8PM while the Brett McCormick Bandwill play from 8:30 to 9:30PM. Barbarians of Sevilla finish out the evening from 10 to 11PM. Throughout the evening, there will be frozen tee shirt contests and a celebrity dunking.

The Manor Fest parade starts off the Festival on Saturday, October 6 at 10AM. Vendors will also open their booths along Burnet Street at 10; their wares include jewelry, baby blankets, baked goods, candles, pom poms, koozies, and tote bags. There will be plenty to eat as well – we have kettle corn, funnel cakes, hamburgers, corn dogs, and cotton candy.

The live music lineup for Saturday begins at 11:30AM with Brian Ledford, followed byKeith Kelso from 1 to 2PM, the Jeff Latham Band from 2:30 to 3:30PM, and the Staylyins will close the music portion of the Festival from 4 to 5PM.

Jennie Lane Park is dedicated to the kids this year, featuring a spaceship moonwalk, giant super slide, trackless train, bungee trampoline, and water tag provided by Three Ring Service. There will be student performances throughout the day and PTO booths will have a variety of games.

Registration for the Classic Car Show begins at 10:30AM, and judging starts at 12:30. The show features eight classes of prizes, and the classic cars will be on display throughout the day.

BBQ and Dessert Bake-Off judging begins at 11AM and will be held in the Manor Lions Club building located at 105 East Eggleston. A poster judging contest featuring art work from Manor EXCEL Academy students will begin at noon. Sign-up sheets will be available at the Lions Club building for anyone who wants to judge any of the contests.

A wide assortment of items have been donated for the Auction, which begins at 3PM while BBQ Awards will be presented at 5PM. Both of these events will be held in the Lions Club Building.

Remember, Manor Fest is free to the public! Funds raised will support the Manor Lions Club scholarship fund, Manor Lions Club charities and Manor Chamber of Commerce community programs.

Dear Coach Jackson,

Many thanks to you and all the wonderful educators on your team for allowing me and our staff at Good Luck Grill to be a part of the Fox 7 News Football Field Trip and Mustang Madness Spirit Rally!!

I cannot say enough wonderful things about it!  I have been so pumped up about the event since Saturday and have commended you and all the students, faculty, and administrators who participated in the event since Saturday night to anyone who will listen.  The students were wonderful and provided an outstanding example of what the high school experience is all about and represented MHS with flawless perfection.

I would welcome the opportunity to host any MHS event in the future!  To further commend the students…  I saw several students picking up trash and straighten chairs and tables at the conclusion of the news cast… Wow!!!
